Here is the 1969 Mineola High School Varsity Wrestling team. That is George Bevis in the top row sporting the uni-brow. In the center of the picture is my brother Phil. You can read his inscription to his big brother in the upper right. Touching, isn't it? I have a cast on my right leg from surgery to remove cartilage from my knee. Check out my tan buck shoes. Those are red & white striped shoelace too. Really. Also notice that nobody is wearing jeans or sneakers. In 1969 we were still required to wear "chinos" and shoes to school every day. Girls were not permitted to wear pants. Skirts only! |
Here I am wrestling in the North Shore Tournament against a kid from Glen Cove. Notice my smooth wrippling muscles. You can see the brace on my right knee. Check the uniform. Wool tights and top with a bathing suit like thing over it and heavy black rubber sneakers. As you can see, I am in complete control here. |

Still in the first period I have taken over the match. Another good shot of the impressive muscles and the pathetic uniform. I still have these tights by the way. The are in a milk crate in the back. They have little knee pads sewn in and black rubber stirrups. I used to use them for long johns when I went skiing. In the lower left of the audience you can see my friend Figs. He is the one who is looking at the match on the next mat. |

Early in the second period and I am turning this turkey over. You can see in the background on the right the next mat where a kid is getting pinned. I won by pin at 2:17 seconds. In the next round I got killed and my high school wrestling career was over. | |
Here is my brother Phil wearing the same ugly uniform. This match is at Mineola Jr High, where the wrestling team was banished by the AD. The cool thing about this picture is my Mom & Dad in the upper right. He is tense and she is just freaking out. They were always there for us. That is so cool. |
