Paper Bag 21 is upon us. The year just seems to fly by. Lisa Layton deserves a pat on the back for handling the food donation. Folks in need in several Long Island communities were helped through her efforts and your generosity. Anyway, as you can see from the list we have a nice little bag this year. Two brown bag sets, and Disraeli Gears. The final (tentative) songlist is on the back of this sheet. It is in show order. Vocalists please see Mr. Barca and sign up for unclaimed songs (1st come, 1st served). Instrumentalists must check with your Section Leader for song assignments. On run-through day (Mon June 29) we must end at 9:30pm so the club can open. Please be on time that night and be ready when you are needed. Everyone should be checking with your Section Leader so that you are kept up to date. Please get your ticket money in early. Mark Coffey, the man who procures our shirts is the father of twins and a very hard working individual. He plays in the guitar section and has much music to learn. Please inform Mr. Guido now as to what name and number you would like on your shirt and save this guy some precious time. We thank you. Please bring a can of food for donation to those in our community who are less fortunate than we. Thanks Because approximately 10% of Bag tickets that are turned in at the door are not paid for, we have a new ticket policy. You must pay for tickets already received, before being issued more tickets. I am sorry for any inconvienience this may cause. Itinerary |

The theme for this years Bag is Brown & Cream. This idea came from an e-mail I received last year from two members of the audience, Lisa & Gary Penny, who I still have never met. The idea was to have a brown bag, you know with like- Jackson Browne. At the first section leader meeting in January, the executive board liked the suggestion and adopted it. The Cream part came about because, as my sweet wife Susie says, The section leaders are just a bunch of old farts who havent heard a new song they like in 15 years. This is true. While we take suggestions from many sources, the music we perform at the Bag is basically a reflection of me, old fart 46 year old Mike Guido. This is my music. I have been a musician my whole life. I am fortunate enough to have a job teaching music in Garden City Middle School where I play and enjoy many genres of music- jazz, classical, marching band, big band, pop, standards, opera, show music- you name it. But this music, the Paper Bag music, is me. We enjoy playing it- you enjoy listening to it. Have a good time tonight- we expect you, the audience, to sing, play, clap, stomp & whistle right along with the band. Please make sure that everyone arrives home safely. See ya next year. Mike More
Paper Bag History The Disappearing Bag Tape This is the spot where I get to thank Dick at Supreme Trophy in Huntington Station; Rainbow Video; S-K Sound;, Mark Coffey and the crew at Goldman Bros.; WBAB, Minuteman Printing in East Northport; The Maker of the Melon Peggy Irwin; Lisa Layton for her wonderful work collecting and distributing food; my brothers and sisters working at the front door missing the show; my three girls, Emma, Sara & Sue for making me the happy boy you see here tonight. Mulcahys is some great place to enjoy the Bag. From John Murray and Ken Tobin, right across to the bar backs, every one of the seemingly endless number of employees of this club is unfailingly helpful. These people understand the the Paper Bag at its purest essence. The Bag has matured these past 3 years, in no small part due to the support provided by these fine people. Please thank the Mulcahys staff when you see them. Patronize this fine establishment all year. The Savannah Joe Kommnick Are these donuts fresh? Moment Many of you in the Paper Bag community knew Joe Kommnick simply as Savannah. I had the privilege working with this gentle man in the clubs on the South Shore for over 10 years. Savannah Joe was a bright ray of happiness that cut through the smoky air and shined into your heart. He was always ready with a joke, your favorite libation, or an absurd movie quote . There was never anything harsh about Savannah Joe none of the rough edges many of us who live the night life develop. I miss his company. In 1996 we inaugurated the tradition of performing a song each year that connects us with Joe, so that we may have a vehicle to help us remember this fine man. This year, Messin with the Kid is dedicated to Savannah Joe. In keeping with Joes sense of humor, and to ease the melancholy of the moment, before we begin the song, We ask all of you to place an index finger, held horizontally, just below your nose and all together ask in a falsetto voice Are these donuts fresh? THE BROWN PAPER BAG is the only thing civilized man has produced that does not seem out of place in nature. Crumpled into a wad of wrinkles, like the fossilized brain of a dryad; looking weathered; seemingly slow and rough enough to be a product of natural evolution; its brownness the low key brown of potato skin and peanut shell, dirty but pure; its kinship to tree unobstructed by the cruel crush of industry; absorbing the elements like any other organic entity a No. 8 Kraft brown paper bag lay discarded in the hills of Huntington and it appears to live where it lay by
Tom Robbins No one of the musicians or crew members are paid for these performances, we do it because we are having more fun than anyone on the planet. 1998
