years huh? Actually, the very first performance of the song Paper
Bag was on March 23, 1974 in Gene
Jacobs basement in Hempstead. I was playing a Hoyer Ham Sandwich
model bass guitar with a 2 crack in the neck at the headstock.
Also in the band that day were Doug Dattoma- Gretch Country Gentleman
guitar, Gene Jacobs- Fender Strat, Marc Dattoma- flute, Jerome DeCarlo-
Farfisa organ, Dom Civitella on drums. The name of the group was the
Phil Gagliano Band, (named after the ball player, of course) We had
a lot of fun, the Phil Gagliano band. As a matter of fact, we have had
a lot of fun in every band Ive ever been in, Cutaway, Zubin, the
Kim Strongin Band, Liberal Arts, and now, for the past 13 years, the
Jim Small Band. It is a pleasure to be able to play music. You meet
the nicest people when you play in a band. Thats how I met Mrs.
Guido. I sure am a happy boy. Have fun tonight. Mike
PAPER BAG WHAT A DRAG First I must
give honorable mention to Roast Beef Joe
who has made an annual ritual out of going to the cash machine on
his way to the Bag Movie so he can be the first to pay for his tickets.
I like that. Now, to other important matters. Little Sara Patricia
Guido is now 81/2 months old. Her sister Emma is 4 going on 25. I
now live in a house with 3 women who all think that they are in charge.
Of me that is. I love my girls. As usual, special thanks goes out
to the crews at Rainbow Video, S-K Sound, Lightcraft, the ladies and
gentlemen at Mulcahys, Walter Symanski for the tapes (Bruce,
take a bow), my old friend Mr. Coffey at Spiegel Sports for his tireless
work procuring our shirts, and of course Dick and the guys at Supreme
Trophy. Mostly we in the band would like to thank you, the Paper Bag
audience. We do no advertising for this show. ZERO~ NADA~ ZED. The
theory behind this is that advertising brings in the general public,
and we all know that the general public is scum. In the club tonight
is the band, their friends, and their friends. Who needs anyone else?
It is you folks with your singing, dancing, yelling and just generally
carousing that make this show a blast for everyone in the building
(except perhaps the clean-up crew who never seemed pleased with us).
I was proud to tell the management here at Mulcahys that we
have never had a fight or similarly unpleasant incident at the Bag.
Considering how much Budweiser disappears each year- that is amazing.
It makes me proud to be associated with you. THE BROWN PAPER
BAG is the only
thing civilized man has produced that does not seem out of place in
nature. Crumpled into a wad of wrinkles, like the fossilized brain
of a dryad; looking weathered; seemingly slow and rough enough to
be a product of natural evolution; its brownness the low key brown
of potato skin and peanut shell, dirty but pure; its kinship to tree
unobstructed by the cruel crush of industry; absorbing the elements
like any other organic entity a No. 8 Kraft brown paper bag lay discarded
in the hills of Huntington and it appears to live where it lay No one of the musicians or crew members are paid for these performances, we do it because we are having more fun than anyone on the planet. 1995 SECTION
