1984 - Year of the Bag

May 1, 1984

Dear Paper-Bagger,

Well, it's that time of year again. How about that movie, huh? Congratulations to Tony Rome for his nomination for best supporting hairdo. I hope you've been keeping a good bag on this year.

Here now the news:
THIS YEAR'S PAPER BAG IS SCHEDULED FOR JUNE 26, 1984 AT RUMRUNNERS OF OYSTER BAY (Scene of last years debacle).

One of our Paper Bag members has instilled in me the idea that "it's up to every generation to create it's own tradition." We, the 60 participants in the Paper Bag share something that is unique to the history of mankind. It's been seven years now and we keep coming back. The Bag has grown from a completely chaotic, drunken two hour scream to a show we can all be proud of and truly enjoy. We need look no further than our own smile to justify a long and healthy like for the Paper Bag.

Yes, you guessed it, this letter is about money. In order to stage this years Bag, our needs are as follows:

60 shirts @ $15 a pop
$900.00
Stage lighting
400.00
Printing & advertising
200.00
BEER (we drank 25 cases last year, a record)
250.00
Misc. materials (extra stage platforms etc.)
150.00
Video tape and supplies
150.00
P.A. gear
- 0 -
Video gear
- 0 -
Labor and alot of it
- 0 -

All these items must be paid for in advance. Last year I was lucky enough to receive financial backing and those of you who know about it know what a fiasco it was. So far this year, no one has stepped forward with $2,000 in his hand and a smile on his face. I'm broke. As it stands

1984 - Year of the Bag

the Bag's financial records are in the red for roughly $1,500 over our six year history, including $600 worth of red ink from last year.

We have three alternatives to come up with the loot:

1 - CUT CORNERS- I don't want to do this because last years show was, in everyone's opinion, by far the best we've ever staged, and the most fun. This was due directly to the money we spent. The Bag grows every year. Let's not take a step backward.
2 - LUCK OUT- There are approximately 60 of us directly involved with the show. Maybe one of us has the money or knows someone who does and would be reimbursed with ticket revenue.
3 - INTERNAL FINANCING- (the stock option) There are 60 of us. If we sell 10 tickets each, we have $1,800 to play with.

If you notice, I've included 10 tickets with this letter. You could give them away or you could sell them. Either way, I must have received from each of you $30 by June 4. If you can't afford to take $30 from your pocket you don't have to. You have tickets to sell. If I don't have $1200 or so by June 4, we won't have a show and all of this grand tradition will go down the toilet. WHAT A DRAG.

I'm sure all of you can find it in your budget to cover this small expense which will buy you so many laughs. We all know faster ways to blow $30.00.

Please contact me as soon as possible to let me know what name and number you want on your shirt. Please take the June 4 deadline seriously. Without money we will not have a show this year.

DON'T BAG IT
