As we move further along the back wall, we get another look at the decrepit hand and of course the ubiquitous Band Room Rules. This is one of those pics that makes me wish I had taken my time focusing the camera. I never really intended to use these for anything other than to look at and remember when.
The collage was made for me by the aforementioned tuba player Sean. It has lots of electric basses and bass players and even the logos from several rock bands I played in. Even then he knew.
Then there is an original Woodstock poster. This was given to me in the late 70s by my friend Bill Mason. It lived on the wall of the band van for a while and then moved to my first classroom in 1993.
The EV speaker is in one of the shelves constructed for me by custodian Paul when I first arrived. Not everyone was happy that I had a PA system set up in the band room. It's a music room. We played music every day. We listened to music every day. We used keyboards and guitars and microphones. I never understood what the problem was.
At the left on the grey shelf (piece of deck lumber left over from the deck I built at home) are 3 little busts of Mozart, Beethovan and Bach. The white circles on top are cards identifying them. I tried to fill my classroom with stuff that would make kids happy and curious. I wanted them to ask questions. Whenever I spoke about the music composed by the three aforementioned composers I always grabbed his bust and emphasized my point by speaking through the disembodied head. |
Then there are a series of small characters
that my daughters played with when they were young. I see Owl (Winnie the Pooh), most of the cast of The Wizard of Oz and the crew from Snow White (my kids adorably referred to the Seven Dwarves as the "Ho-men"). Then there are a series of Troll dolls with wild, gravity defying hairdos.
Joe, Paulie Rod & Eddie - Goal Room OGs
The odd random stuff I kept in my room mostly just sat there and was entertaining to look at. It added color to the environment. However, kids would sometimes take them down and play with them. I would play with them. Math teachers use manipulatives to illustrate concepts. I used little figurines. |
