Paper Bag 2000 What a concept. Tentative Songlist #11 is on the back of this sheet. Any last minute requests should be communicated to your section leader. Keep in touch with your section leader for up to date info. Vocalists please see Mr. Barca and sign up for unclaimed songs (1st come, 1st served). Instrumentalists must check with your section leader for song assignments. On run-through day (Mon June 26) we must end at 9:15pm so the club can open. Please be on time that night and be ready when you are needed. This year we have 70 musicians and over 150 people on the support staff. Please remember that Bag shirts are to be worn only by the person to whom the shirt has been issued. Have fun, get your ticket money and shirt name in early, and remember to floss vigorously.

20% of the Bag tickets used by customers to gain admission last year were not paid for. In order for the Bag to continue as we know it, we need operating capital. Please understand that, unless you have been issued COMP tickets, every Bagger is responsible for at least 4 tickets worth of revenue. (In other words, be sure to fork over your 40 bucks so that we can continue to have the Paper Bag)

I would like to list in the program the name and phone # or web site for any band you guys perform with. Give me that information as soon as possible. Also, please inform Mr. Guido now as to what name and number you would like on your shirt. We thank you.

Please bring a can of food for donation to those in our community who are less fortunate than we. Thanks

The theme for this year’s Bag is the Doggie Bag. We like having a theme. We are also doing a Tribute to the Wah Wah Pedal, and The Scotty K Dream Set. Scott has been known as “the big dog”, so maybe there is some cosmic connection. Many dogs are celebrated by the names that appear on the backs of tonight’s bag shirts. My daughters have chosen to honor Buddy, their dog, with the phrase “Who’s da Bay-bay?” (spoken with a sort of a lisp). Buddy has changed the “dynamics” of our household with the predictable result of Dad falling further down the food chain. E-mail me at ThePaperBag @ aol.com. Tell me your Paper Bag experiences and ideas. Share your bag with me. We have had people meet at the bag, get married and start families. what about you? I’m sure there are some wild bag stories out there. We are planning a Paper Bag yearbook for the 25th baggiversary. Send your stories and ideas in today. Hey, ya never know. Have a good time tonight- we expect you, the audience, to sing, play, clap, stomp & whistle right along with the band. Please make sure that everyone arrives home safely. See ya next year. Mike

This is the spot where I get to thank… Dick at Supreme Trophy in Huntington Station; Eko Video; S-K Sound; Mark Coffey and the crew at Goldman Bros., Minuteman Printing in East Northport; The Maker of the Melon Peggy Irwin; Jill Silberberg- the sign girl; Lisa Layton for her wonderful work collecting and distributing food; the faculty and staff at Garden City MS; my brothers and sisters working at the front door missing the show; my three girls, Emma, Sara & Sue for making me the happy boy you see here tonight. As you can see, I live a charmed existence.

Mulcahy’s…is some great place to enjoy the Bag. From John Murray and Ken Tobin, right across to the bar backs, every one of the seemingly endless number of employees of this club is unfailingly helpful. These people understand the the Paper Bag at its purest essence. Mul’s now holds the record, with 6 bags, in no small part due to the support provided by these fine people. Please thank the Mulcahy’s staff when you see them. Patronize this fine establishment all year.

The Savannah Joe Kommnick “Are these donuts fresh?” Moment Many of you in the Paper Bag community knew Joe Kommnick simply as “Savannah.” I had the privilege working with this gentle man in the clubs on the South Shore for over 10 years. Savannah Joe was a bright ray of happiness that cut through the smoky air and shined into your heart. He was always ready with a joke, your favorite libation, or an absurd movie quote . There was never anything harsh about Savannah Joe…none of the rough edges many of us who live the night life develop. I miss his company. In 1996 we inaugurated the tradition of performing a song each year that connects us with Joe, so that we may have a vehicle to help us remember this fine man. This year, Dreams I'll Never See is dedicated to Savannah Joe. In keeping with Joe’s sense of humor, and to ease the melancholy of the moment, before we begin the song, We ask all of you to place an index finger, held horizontally, just below your nose and all together ask in a falsetto voice …“Are these donuts fresh?

THE BROWN PAPER BAG is the only thing civilized man has produced that does not seem out of place in nature. Crumpled into a wad of wrinkles, like the fossilized brain of a dryad; looking weathered; seemingly slow and rough enough to be a product of natural evolution; its brownness the low key brown of potato skin and peanut shell, dirty but pure; its kinship to tree unobstructed by the cruel crush of industry; absorbing the elements like any other organic entity a No. 8 Kraft brown paper bag lay discarded in the hills of Huntington and it appears to live where it lay.

2000 SECTION LEADERS
More Paper Bag Tradition •
I get alot of the credit for this show. Which is ok, because I do alot of work. However, most of what I do falls under the clerical, everyday nuts and bolts of running an annual show of this size. Most of the creative work is done by a collection of human anomalies known as the Section Leaders. Occasionally, when we feel particularly bombastic, we refer to ourselves as the Executive Board. Board meetings begin in January and continue throughout the “bag season.” These meetings, held in the boardroom of course, suffer from a level of decorum that brings to ming the Mad Hatter’s tea party. They are hilarious. Be that as it may…all the creative decisions are made by the section leaders while I sit with my back to them, typing away on this computer ö They decide what we will play, when we will play it, and even who will play it. All I have to do is get them in the same room at the same time. These 19 people are able, year after year, to design shows that are wonderful to participate in. Each section leader is responsible for about 10 baggers. In addition to the creative control of the show, they put in long hours on preparation and organizational tasks. You probably know these people, they are listed in this program. Please thank them when you see them for it is through their expertise and efforts that this evening of insanity is so pleasing musically for the musicians and the audience. It is an honor to work with them. E-mail me with your Bag stories and ideas at ThePaperBag@aol.com. Thanks for coming. Tell all your friends. Mike
