The Important Fact Sheet

It was 20 bags ago today…Can you believe it? 382 different people have participated in the Paper Bag during that span, totalling 2066.5 “bagyears”. We will exist in 4D this year…yes, we will actually laugh in the face of time as it stares back at us. We need someone to volunteer to dub some video tape, please let me know if you are available for that. The final (tentative) songlist is on the back of this sheet. It is in show order. Vocalists please see Mr. Barca and sign up for unclaimed songs (1st come, 1st served). Instrumentalists must check with your Section Leader for song assignments. On run-through day (Mon June 23) we must end at 9:30pm so the club can open. Please be on time that night and be ready when you are needed. Everyone should be checking with your Section Leader so that you are kept up to date. Please get your ticket money in early.

Please bring a can of food for donation to those in our community who are less fortunate than we. Thanks

Mark Coffee, the man who procures our shirts is the father of twins and a very hard working individual. He plays in the guitar section and has much music to learn. Please inform Mr. Guido now as to what name and number you would like on your shirt and save this guy some precious time. We thank you.

Sally
As I looked through a scrapbook this past week, I came across an ad from 1977 listing live music playing that week at Henry Afrika Cafe in Northport. Cutaway, the band I was in at the time, played on a Friday night. Every Thursday, a young lady by the name of Sally Scudder played the piano and sang. I had the good fortune to work with Sally on and off throughout the ensuing 20 years. For the past four years Sally has been a card-carrying (and equipment-carrying) member of the Jim Small Band. I speak for the entire Paper Bag family when I say that I am deeply saddened by her sudden passing. Sally was a joy to be around. She approached everything she did with such exuberance. I can’t accept that I will never look across the stage again and see her in her carefully ironed clothes, her hands on the keys, bobbing her head and tapping her feet in time to the music (bare feet as often as possible). This was one happy lady. The grief that I feel is such that if we pause tonight to formally honor Sally, I don’t feel that we could bounce back. Our prayers go out to Sally’s family, to Doug Raggio, and to all whose lives she touched. Tonight’s performance, every note, every word, every laugh, is dedicated to her memory. In the months to follow, her friends will determine a suitable way to remember this butterfly of a person, and it will become part of the Paper Bag tradition. Please, everyone, make certain that you arrive home safely tonight.

Send your comments, suggestions and jokes. Don’t forget to leave out the “e” in Paper. Last year some guy in Iowa got a ton of my e-mail.

The Savannah Joe Kommnick “Are these donuts fresh?” Moment Many of you in the Paper Bag community knew Joe Kommnick simply as “Savannah.” I had the privilege working with this gentle man in the clubs on the South Shore for over 10 years. Savannah Joe was a bright ray of happiness that cut through the smoky air and shined into your heart. He was always ready with a joke, your favorite libation, or an absurd movie quote . There was never anything harsh about Savannah Joe…none of the rough edges many of us who live the night life develop. I miss his company. In 1996 we inaugurated the tradition of performing a song each year that connects us with Joe, so that we may have a vehicle to help us remember this fine man. This year, Midnight Train To Georgia is dedicated to Savannah Joe. In keeping with Joe’s sense of humor, and to ease the melancholy of the moment, before we begin the song, We ask all of you to place an index finger, held horizontally, just below your nose and all together ask in a falsetto voice …“Are these donuts fresh?

THE BROWN PAPER BAG is the only thing civilized man has produced that does not seem out of place in nature. Crumpled into a wad of wrinkles, like the fossilized brain of a dryad; looking weathered; seemingly slow and rough enough to be a product of natural evolution; its brownness the low key brown of potato skin and peanut shell, dirty but pure; its kinship to tree unobstructed by the cruel crush of industry; absorbing the elements like any other organic entity a No. 8 Kraft brown paper bag lay discarded in the hills of Huntington and it appears to live where it lay
by Tom Robbins
Even Cowgirls Get the Blues
Thanks and a tip of the old Paper Bag hat to Naomi Margolin for discovering the origin of this quote

No one of the musicians or crew members are paid for these performances, we do it because we are having more fun than anyone on the planet.

1997 SECTION LEADERS
Many people wonder how this crazy, complicated show, with all its myriad details, ever comes together at all. Most of the credit goes to the Section Leaders who work many hours so that we can all enjoy the Bag. Thank them when you see them go by.
